Intro Shocking new CDC report shows the measles are making a comeback. I'm Jim Drastic. I'm Tiffany Drastic. And I'm Nick Kudson. And today on the dangerous ones, 25 years after measles was declared eradicated in the United States, a report today from the CDC shows that 2025 has the highest number of new cases since 1992. Oh my god. That's over three decades, folks. cases have popped up in 39 of the 50 states this year with 1,288 cases so far in total. Around 95% of the people with confirmed cases this year were previously unvaccinated. For those of you who don't know, measles is an incredibly contagious disease that spreads through the air. The measles virus can remain in the air for hours after an infected person has left a room. And 90% of unvac unvaccinated people exposed to the disease typically contract it. Particularly vulnerable groups include children under five, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. The disease had been eradicated previously because the United States achieved herd immunity. For measles, we need 95% vaccination rates to prevent ongoing outbreaks. It's now spreading in communities where vaccination rates have dipped into the low 90s or even into the 80s as you'll tell us in a few minutes, putting everybody's kids at risk. We'll walk you through the symptoms in a bit because in 2025, we can't have nice things. Now we have to worry about this [ __ ] on top of everything else. Take it seriously Well, you know, the one thing I would say is ever since co, ever since 2020, we take these things I take them way more seriously. I mean, when I hear a little blip on the news, blip, I'm like, "Oh, what's going on? Let me look up when I got my vaccine." Yeah, you bet. And you know, the measles um is no joke. It does kill people. It does kill children. And so, it's important to take it extremely seriously. Yeah. About two out of every thousand people who contract the disease die of it. There's also this other thing called uh immune amnesia, which is like it makes your body unable to fight other diseases after you get it. So, is that right? Yeah. So, it's dangerous. So, so your body is now susceptible to all of those other things. That's correct. Cool. Yeah. Cool. Cool. Cool. Love it. West Texas It keeps on giving. Yeah. Well, let me uh let me let's start with a show of hands. Who here has had the measles? Raise your hand. Okay. Who here has had the measles vaccine? Exactly. It works everybody. We all raised our hands cuz we've none of us have had the measles because we've all had the vaccine. Uh so really this all kind of boils down now obviously West Texas is not the only place that this is happening. This is now spread across uh a good swath of America. In fact I'm going to show uh a map on the screen right now of where they are seeing outbreaks and where they're seeing individual isolated cases. Take a look at this map. Um but what is going on in West Texas? Let me talk about it. Uh the 2025 measles outbreak in the US is being driven largely by a concentrated crisis in West Texas, especially the counties like Gaines where vaccination rates have plummeted well below herd immunity like Nick said 95%. In some West Texas communities, the vaccine rates are as low as 82% and in certain private schools even lower around 40 to 60%. Wow. Uh these dangerously low numbers are paired uh with exemption rates as high as 18%. What does that mean? Across the country, you know, the national average is 3%. Meaning about 3% of school children across the country have a doctor's note saying this child doesn't need to be vaccinated. In West Texas, it's up to 18%. Right? In this one little, you know, section of America, it's 18%. And we'll get to why in a minute. This isn't just National Public Health Threat a local problem. It's a national public health threat. Uh once measles uh takes hold in a region, it doesn't stay put. The virus is highly contagious. It's one of the most highly contagious viruses out there. And in our mobile interconnected country, a single outbreak in a low coverage area can quickly seed new cases across state lines. And like Nick said, I I believe you said we are now up to 1,250 cases this year uh which is which is off the charts. There's only one other year in the last uh 25 years that have has even come close to it. And guess what? It was 2019. Who was president then, Nick? Right. Exactly. So the question really is um you know I mean and so basically that makes West Texas you know the Wuhan of the measles. you know, it's kind of the epicenter of where these outbreaks generally are coming from. Why is that happening? Why are people in West Texas not being getting their vaccination? It's a good question because I was extremely curious. I'm like, well, why is that happening there? Especially with this particular vaccine, measles mom's reubella. We've been getting it for decades. Everyone's been fine. It's not a new vaccine. It hasn't been changed in any way. It's it's just Yeah, that's exactly right. And then you and I had ours in 1975. Nick had his in like 1993. When were you born? No, I'm just kidding. Uh so we've So here's the top four reasons on why they think it's happening in West Texas. And number one, wouldn't you know it, misinformation and conspiracy theories, Top 4 Reasons widespread myths about the vaccine safety, like false links to autism or government tracking. Remember that whole [ __ ] when they were like, "There's a [ __ ] chip in the vaccine. like a microchip that's going to like track you. There's a chip in your back pocket right now. It knows everything you're doing. So So first of all, you're hitting the people in West Texas with these with these uh conspiracy theories that aren't true. They were meant to scare you. Uh number two is religious and cultural beliefs. Uh conservative religious groups, including uh the communities, some of them in West Texas, often reject vaccines as unnecessary or contrary to their faith. Number three, political mistrust and anti-government sentiment. In a region known for rugged individualism, and we love that, we love that about Texas. Uh many view vaccines as government overreach and the threat to p and a threat to personal freedom. And finally, uh the fourth reason why they think this is happening there is lack of access and infrastructure, long distances. If you've ever been to West Texas, it is very long, very flat, lots of area in between cities. Uh limited clinics and scarce public health resources make it hard for some families to get vaccinated even if they wanted to. I wanted to tell you a quick very Story Time quick story. When I was 15 years old, I ran away from home. My parents were lovely. Had nothing to do with them. I was just being a jerk. And anyways, myself and three other friends and a dog all piled into a 1969 white Ford Fairlene. Three on the tree. I'm not even kidding. And drove from Portland, Oregon to where? West Texas. Yes, it's true. Leach, Texas by way through we went through Amarillo, the whole thing. Wound up in West Texas in uh in Lach. And I have to tell you from the bottom of my heart, these are some of the nicest human beings on earth. I spent a week and a half there before they shipped me back on a Greyhound. And shame on you for doing that to your mother. Shame on Oh my god. I can't even like in my heart. Oh my god. I My my poor mom. I know. They still kept the note that I left when I ran away. They gave it to me later. I can't even read it. It's a whole thing. Good. I Yeah. Yeah. Oh my god. Yeah. But I wanted my point was is that when I was there, I had never met I mean, you know, people in Portland are fantastic and lovely people, but people in West Texas go out of their way to be extremely nice and cordial and whatnot. So, you hate to see this happen to these fine folks. They love their families just like we do. They They fight for their families. They would jump in front of a train for their families. It just I just it makes me so sad that kids are dying. Yeah. And then you know I mean in Texas lately we've just been hit with just a bunch of tragedies with Yaldi and now the floods recently. You know it's just What to Look For terrible stuff. So folks we want to make sure that you know what to look for. The truth be told I you know like we just said I've never had the measles. Um I don't really know a lot about uh the measles other than I know it gives you a rash or something. But Tiffany, can you walk us through what to look for and what to do? Okay. So, the signs and symptoms of measles and sometimes it can be missed because it's cough and runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, red eyes. Um, sounds familiar. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. High fever is one of the things where if you're a mom and you're taking your kids's temperature, 104, that's like the, you know, dangerous territory. Comes with really high fever. 104, 105, very dangerous, which causes brain swelling and, you know, it's it's really it's really dangerous. The other two symptoms are called copic spots, which are just little white spots inside the mouth, and then that distinctive rash. But you can get measles and not have either one of those things. So, you could be walking around thinking you just have a cold and you have measles. Oh, and um the spots in the mouth, they they start after you start getting symptoms. So, after your nose starts running, you're itchy, watery eyes, and you get the spots, that's when you go, "Oh, uhoh, I might might be on my way to measles." The rash starts on the face and the hairline and then it moves down the body. So if you start noticing any kind of, you know, little spots in the you start getting little spots up here, call your doctor. That's the first thing to do. Do not immediately go to the hospital cuz so transmissible, so communicable that it's dangerous. So you could be risk uh putting other people at risk. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. Good. And then uh I would say and first and foremost, if you can please please go get vaccinated. Yeah. For real. Oh, please guys, like hearing about those symptoms and how it can look like a cold and you can just picture somebody from Leach, you know, getting getting on a plane coming up to Oregon to hang out and they and they bring this disease. And the problem with that is it it's not just people who get vaccinated and people who don't get vaccinated. You can't even get vaccinate get the first shot until you're like 6 months old or so. So like infants are very very susceptible to this disease and you know you're you're putting everybody at risk. That's a great point. And when you see numbers uh where there are 40 to 60% of the kids in some schools in West Texas that are not even vaccinated, that's like if you think about it, that's like every day your child could be sitting next to uh 60% of the class could possibly have the measles, not know it, and every day you're playing Russian roulette. You know what I mean? It's just scary, scary stuff, folks. Um, and I know that most of our listeners uh probably already have the vaccination. Uh, and and uh we're going to put some information in the in the description so people can pass that along uh to other folks. Yeah. The other thing was with all the cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, now rural hospitals are going to be closing. It's going to be harder to find care. You're going to have to travel further to get it, encountering more people. So, it's it's really important to start paying attention and really start thinking like, you know, do I want to risk my child's life? I don't, you know, I got my kids vaccinated when they were very young, never had measles, never been around people with measles cuz they were all vaccinated. So, it's important to to think about other people. I know that's a foreign concept to some, but we really need to start taking care of each other. And I would say, let's use our social media uh platforms to spread the message that uh the vaccine does not cause autism. Uh it does not have a chip in it. And as much as I want to make fun of that, I'm just going to I'm going to step back because some people believe that kind of stuff. We need to use our social medias and let's not make fun of these people. Let's let's educate. You know what I mean? And it's we have to think about where that information is coming from and the people who are giving it to you do not love this country. They are not on our side. They're trying to break us from within. And we can't we're not that's not sustainable. We need to come together now. It doesn't it doesn't we we need everybody to get on the stick, you know. And like you said, there could be a bit of a hospital desert which could be cropping up after this new budget just came out. And I wouldn't want to find out. I would I would much rather just protect my child now. Well, and also the reliability of this kind of information coming out of the CDC is going to be suspect in the future because of the sort of top topheavy, you know, in uh control coming down from the Trump administration. Absolutely. Loyalists don't really do the work of the people. They do the work of who they're loyal to. So, excellent point. Have you had the measles? What is your experience?
